Programs
Arizona Telemedicine Ophthalmic Program (ATOP)
ATOP is the AFEH cornerstone "best practices"
Ocular Risk Assessment program model.
Its purpose is to function in a similar manner
to the mammography model of early detection
and prevention of breast cancer. ATOP seeks to
detect and prevent the development of treatable eye
disorders and diseases.
ATOP utilizes advanced telecommunications
(telemedicine) to electronically capture and
transmit eye images between the originating
screening site and the AFEH Image Reading
Laboratory, in Phoenix, Arizona.
At the laboratory, a team
of volunteer
Ophthalmologists
provides a diagnostic
commentary that is then
electronically returned
with the eye images, back to the originating site.
There, the primary healthcare provider and
patient review and discuss the outcome.

AZSightSaver
Taking ATOP on the road throughout Arizona!
AZ SightSaver is a mobile expansion of
ATOP. AZ SightSaver will fulfill the need for
accessible sight saving services in Arizona.
This state-of-the-art mobile eye center
promotes an earlyintervention methodology toward treatable
eye disease and removes
geographic barriers, thus reducing the probability of vision loss and blindness for
Arizona's underserved and underinsured populations.
The Journey
The creation of the AZSightSaver Mobile Eye Center has been a wonderful and enriching Journey. AFEH staff and myriad external participants have spent countless hours of research, planning, budgeting, fund-raising, marketing, protocol and service programming to bring the AZSS program to its successful launch on Saturday, October 17, 2009, by participating in Macy's Shop for a Cause. We invite you to view our Journey by clicking here.
AZ SightSaver serves as a prototype for mobile eye centers for
establishing best practices, utilizing telemedicine, and reaching underserved and underinsured
populations, wherever the need exists. Click here for more information on AZSightSaver
